The National Emergency Nobody is Talking About

A little over a week ago the national debt surpassed $22 trillion dollars. During the same week, Congress passed another spending bill that looks just like every other spending bill that has been passed in the last ten years:

    ▪    It spent too much money with absolutely no effort to contain spending
    ▪    It was introduced without any ability for amendment or for individual members of Congress to influence the bill
    ▪    It was held until the last minute of an arbitrary deadline, so that members would have to approve the package to avoid another government shutdown.

I voted against this bill for these reasons, and also because it didn’t include any meaningful solutions to our dysfunctional immigration system.

This process for passing spending bills was pioneered by congressional Democrats in the early days of the Obama presidency. Since then Republicans and Democrats have controlled both houses of Congress and the White House, and there will be plenty of blame to share when the inevitable moment of accountability comes for this reckless spending.

I have opposed, voted against, and done everything I can to educate Americans about these disastrous spending bills. Every time we have a vote on one of these bills I ask you and my other followers to help me find and mobilize everyone we can to demand that leaders in Washington change course.

I am optimistic that we will continue to grow this army of supporters. However, we clearly don’t have enough support yet. If you look at the conservative senators who joined me in voting against this vote, you will see that we are making progress:

    ▪    Sen. Cruz (elected in 2012)
    ▪    Sen. Inhofe (longtime fiscal conservative)
    ▪    Sen. Paul (elected in 2010)
    ▪    Sen. Rubio (elected in 2010)
    ▪    Sen. Sasse (elected in 2014)
    ▪    Sen. Scott (elected in 2014)
    ▪    Sen. Braun (elected in 2018)
    ▪    Sen. Hawley (elected in 2018)

I was elected in the tea party wave of 2010 by concerned Americans who were upset about the reckless spending in Washington. I am encouraged that the list of fiscal conservatives in the Senate has slowly and surely been growing. I am encouraged that the list of Americans who are joining me in this cause continues to grow.

It has taken us decades to get into this mess, and it won’t be fixed overnight. But, I am committed to getting it fixed. You can help by encouraging your friends and family to join us in this cause. As the nation has a discussion about how to identify and respond to national emergencies, I hope we don’t lose sight of the fact that our national debt, and the reckless spending that is facilitated by a horrible legislative process in Washington will one day manifest itself as a national emergency unlike any this nation has ever faced.
